Kendal wastewater treatment works is the main facility for the Kendal area, servicing a large residential and tourist population equivalent to 82,384 people, and discharging into the River Kent. The works were severely impacted by Storm Desmond as the outfall was washed away. Therefore, work is being undertaken to repair this (completed).

Further work is also being undertaken to increase the capacity of the works to cope with an increased population, as forecast. There are also further drivers to reduced phosphate and ammonia loadings and so work is being undertaken to improve treatment processes. More information here on the completion of NEREDA plant in 2019.

Tightening of Kendal Wastewater Treatment Works final effluent phosphorous permit from 1mg/l to 0.25 mg/l.

Likely year of completion: 2025
