Lancaster University have been successful in gaining NERC-funded research for Natural Flood Management (NFM) in Cumbria. In South Cumbria this will focus on the Kent catchment, where a number of projects have been proposed and delivered using NFM techniques. A number of pilot studies are underway, however, little research has been undertaken to determine the broader scale impact of these measures for the communities many miles downstream. Therefore, this research will help to fill some of these gaps by undertaking large scale computer modelling, supported by fieldwork and stakeholder engagement.

Lancaster University will also be working with two other successful NERC-Funded research teams to share information and learning under the NERC Natural Flood Management programme.

Similarly the Environment Agency has recently published its commissioned research on natural flood management under the Working with Natural Processes (WwNP) programme. This pulls together all the evidence into one place. A link to this resource, including publications, case-studies and evidence can be found here.
