United Utilities are reducing Phosphorus loads from a number of their waste water treatment works. A source apportionment study has shown that waste water treatment accounts for 21% of the phosphorus loads in Windermere, with a large portion of the rest being attributed to diffuse sources.

Work will include upgrades to a number of the wastewater treatment works along the side of the lake. It is due to be completed by March 2020.
