Reedbed extent has declined over 90% since the 1980s attributed to a number of factors including grazing by Canada Geese, wave wash from boats, trampling by canoes/ people. Reedbeds are an important habitat for fish and birds, the filter excess nutrients and are a visually appealing aspect of the lake.
SCRT along with a number of partners have re-planted a number of sites with local reeds and erected fences to protect the reeds from grazing and wave wash.
